Let them say you're crazy !
It's not only seasoned professionals and business development experts who do great things. Sometimes, a novice with a great idea and bundles of energy can bring off an amazing scheme.
Consider this parable of the novice and the expert.
A chap who lives inland with no boatbuilding experience, constructs a giant vessel in his back garden. He's undeterred by endless snide remarks and accusations that he's crazy to embark on such a project. Despite having no obvious way to launch the vessel, he beavers away to turn his vision into reality.
By contrast, a large, well organised, experienced, highly-qualified and reputable team constructs a giant vessel in a state-of-the-art shipbuilding yard. Their technology, management, and accomplishment attract lots of media interest and public accolades. Everyone is proud to be involved in the prestigious project.
Which of these describes your business development efforts ?
The first: a highly motivated person beavering away at what looks like an impossible and maybe foolhardy task ?
The second: a sophisticated and expensive marketing machine doing lots of glamorous and high-tech things which get noticed ?
Or, somewhere in between ?
In this parable, the inland boat builder is Noah. He felt compelled to build an Ark to weather any storm. When it rained, he was no longer an object of derision, but his grand plan assures his survival and ultimate victory.
The large team built the Titanic. It was launched amid enormous publicity and pride - a modern miracle and unsinkable.
Just because you have the best skills and resources, your business development efforts can be dangerously flawed. With insight and vision, even a newcomer can succeed.
Always remember: an amateur built the Ark - professionals built the Titanic.
