Dr Lilla Smee
In a deadline-driven environment, I like to find the balance between getting it perfect and getting it done.
With pragmatism and enthusiasm, Lilla helps professional services clients on critical business development and marketing projects, from tender and bid responses to comprehensive research reports and bespoke business development initiatives.
Lilla has worked with clients to project manage and write winning tender responses to state and federal government, as well as to Zurich Insurance Group, Suncorp, AIG, Avant (medical defence organisation), and the University of Sydney (and more).
She develops specialist credentials documents and capability statements to support firms’ business development and growth strategies. A highlight was the development of a business case for an intellectual property firm’s presentation to an international client – they won significant new business as a result. Lilla also supports Partner Alistair Marshall to deliver business development coaching and training sessions.
Lilla has a background in qualitative and quantitative research and analysis. She managed an Australia-wide survey of topical legal issues facing the not-for-profit sector on behalf of a client. Most recently, Lilla worked on a significant research study undertaken by JMA, in partnership with the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA), on business development and marketing in Australasian law firms. Lilla comprehensively analysed the response data from the survey, and presented findings at a live webinar.
Her calm and positive approach, combined with strong organisational, writing, and editing skills, ultimately delivers positive outcomes for clients.
“[Lilla’s] ability to increase the quality and language of the document was brilliant and helped me with the final part. Timely, efficient and quality service.” (client tendering to federal government, 2016)
Prior to joining JMA, Lilla worked for a leading media research and issues management advisory firm where she capably managed a geographically dispersed operations team. Here, she honed her skills in research and analysis (including media analysis and client reputation surveys), staff and leadership development, developing and implementing efficient workflow systems and practices, and project implementation.
Lilla has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Sydney.
In her spare time, she volunteers for an animal welfare group and an international non-profit foundation that provides grants to writers.

Have you ever used Google to find out more about someone you met at a networking event or conference? Chances are that their LinkedIn profile showed up somewhere near the top of search results, and probably higher than their firm website bio. If someone Googled you, what would they find? The most profitable professional services firms understand that a successful marketing strategy is part of everything they do; it’s a coordinated process, not just a series of campaigns. Just like politicians who stay on message, the most successful firms have focus: from cultivating referral relationships to tweeting, each activity is aligned to the overall goals […]
With the ever-increasing debate around hourly billing and alternatives, and savvier and more demanding clients, professional services firms – and in particular, law firms – need to get smarter about how to manage pricing if they are to remain profitable. It seems inevitable in some areas of law (insurance, property) that it’s simply a race […]
